1 Billion Rising

1 Billion Rising

We love dance trends and recently people from all over the world are bouncing out of their chairs to create and perform in flashmobs as they grow in their popularity and are performed in public spaces. Accompanying this public dance movement are international dance days that work to bring people together in solidarity through dance and broaden social awareness regarding the art form and its unifying capabilities.

1 Billion Rising is an international movement that claims Valentines Day (V-day) as its territory to end violence against women. “A global strike, an invitation to dance,” women and men all over the world celebrate and advocate 1 Billion Rising. Referred to as “risings” communities stage performances, flashmobs, classes, videos, lessons and more to speak out against rape, abuse and other intersecting issues causing violence against women.

V-day provides many tools and resources for community members to become involved. Their website allows organizers to post events, and participants can find events in their city/state. The site highlights videos of rising dances being performed by children in Africa, elders with disabilities in a group home, teens in their high school dance class and more. The days anthem, “Break the Chain,” is beautiful and exciting to dance too and goes along with choreography by Debbie Allen.

I participated in 1 Billion Rising and taught the “Break the Chain” Dance to my students in Oakland, and women and children at a residential center. The dance was a hit. Everyone loved the song and choreography and it felt amazing to be part of a bigger movement that was extremely powerful in its mission and solidarity. The lyrics of the song are inspirational, and a blessing for women. When billions of people come together to focus their thoughts, bodies and spirits on the same intention the universe feels it and responds. V-day transforms a day designed for love and romance into a sacred day that advocates safety and non-violence for us all.

if you participated in 1 Billion Rising let us know. Leave a comment and/or share your pictures/videos.

I dance cause I love
Dance cause I dream
Dance cause I’ve had enough
Dance to stop the screams
Dance to break the rules
Dance to stop the pain
Dance to turn it upside down
Its time to break the chain, oh yeah
